TCP/IP Error -3162 The server is not responding

Document ID: 2444HQ

Issue:

When sending mail I get a "TCP/IP Error -3162 The server is not responding" message.

Solution:

The problem is with the mail server. The solution is to wait for your Internet Service Provider to fix their problem. If you have not already done so, call or email them and ask them for a fix.

If you are interested, here is a long description of the problem from our engineers:

We've looked into the problem with the people who are getting those tcp/ip errors when sending mail. It is quite clear that this is a server problem, and not a Eudora problem. The server is simply dropping the connection in response to the QUIT command, instead of doing the "right thing". The "right thing", as highlighted below in excerpts from the SMTP rfc's (821 and 2821), is for the server to respond to the QUIT command with an positive reply code (221 for example), then close the connection. The reason Eudora users are getting the errors is that Eudora is waiting for the 221 response only to find the underlying connection is no longer there. RFC says the sender (Eudora) "should not close the transmission channel until it send a QUIT command and receives the reply".

Eudora is doing the right thing. The Internet Service Provider needs to fix their server(s).
