Telnet to mail server - MAC OS X

Document ID: 2405HQ

Issue:

I want to telnet to my mail servers to make sure they are working.

Solution:

1. Click on Go/Applications/Utilities folder/Terminal.

2. In the terminal window type:

telnet popserver 110 <enter>

You will get a "+Ok POP" server ready message. This shows that the incoming mail server is available and ready to exchange login and password information.

Then type your username:

<your username> <enter>

It should say "+Ok password required..."

Then type in your password:

<password> <enter>

It should say "+Ok you have ... messages"

For your SMTP server, type:

telnet smtpserver 25 <enter>

If you receive a positive message in the telnet window, Eudora should send and receive email. If you don't get a positive message, the mail servers are not working or not available. Call your ISP and check with them for a solution.

KEYWORDS: EPMAC, ISP, TELNET, OS X, POP, SMTP
