Eudora Installer wants a Password (Windows)

Document ID: 2357HQ

Issue:

I just downloaded the Eudora installer, but can't install. It keeps asking me for a password before I can install.

Solution:

The Eudora installer does not have a password.

What is happening is that either Netscape SmartDownloader or Microsoft Updater are installed on your computer and are mistaking the Eudora updater as one of their products that requires a password to install.

One solution is to boot your computer in Windows Safe Mode, then run the installer in Safe Mode.

  • Note that Windows Help is not available when you are running in Safe Mode. You may want to print these instructions for your reference.

  • Restart your computer by going to the Start button, choosing Shut Down, and then clicking Restart The Computer.

  • When you see the message "Starting Windows...," press F8 on your keyboard. (Later versions of Windows will allow you to hold down the Ctrl key while restarting to gain access to Safe Mode.)

  • Choose "Safe Mode". Do Not start Windows with network support. In Safe Mode, Windows uses the minimum default settings required to start Windows. You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other devices.

  • Run the Eudora installer. After it finishes, restart.

The other solution is to uninstall SmartDownload or the Microsoft updater, then run the Eudora installer.
