Setting up SSL in Eudora

Document ID: 2307HQ

Beginning with version 5.1, Eudora now supports SSL connections for POP3, SMTP, and IMAP4. Eudora 5.1 is set by default to use SSL if available.

To access the SSL settings open the Personalities window by clicking Tools:Options

Once the Personalities window is in view, right click the desired Personality and select Properties

Note that Eudora is already set to If Available, STARTTLS. STARTTLS is the command that is sent to the server to tell it that you wish to use SSL for the mail transaction.

The Generic Properties tab is used to set the SSL options for sending mail (SMTP). The available options are:

  • Never -- tells Eudora not to use SSL
  • If Available, STARTTLS -- tells Eudora to use SSL if it is available
  • Required, Alternate Port -- tells Eudora that the use of  SSL is required, on the alternate port (more on this in a minute)
  • Required, STARTTLS -- tells Eudora that the use of SSL is required

The SSL options for POP3 and IMAP4 are located on the Incoming Mail tab:

Normally, Eudora will use SSL on the standard port for that service (110 for POP3, 25 for SMTP, and 143 for IMAP4). Selecting Required, Alternate Port tells Eudora that SSL is required, but on a port other than the standard port for that service. The ports used by the Alternate Port setting are:

  • POP3 -- uses port 995
  • SMTP -- uses port 465
  • IMAP4 -- uses port 993

These ports can be changed through the use of settings added to eudora.ini, but in most cases changing these should not be required.

For advanced users:

In order to change the port for use with Required, Alternate Port, the following settings need to be added to eudora.ini:

  • SMTPSSLAlternatePort=
  • POPSSLAlternatePort=
  • IMAPSSLAlternatePort=

First quit Eudora. Then open eudora.ini with Notepad and add these entries under the [Settings] section. Place the desired port number after the "=" sign. Once you have the desired settings entered, save the changes and exit Notepad. When you open Eudora, the new settings will be in effect.
