Norton Antivirus 2000 is changing my settings Document ID: 1843HQISSUE: After an error message when checking or sending mail, I notice that my settings have changed and my login name is now my login name with my mail server appended to it and my mail servers are set to 127.0.0.1 or 'localhost'. SOLUTION: Your antivirus application is changing your settings to localhost (127.0.0.1) as part of their virus scanning process. NOTE: This should not be an issue if you are running the latest patches for your antivirus application of choice Your antivirus application wants to run all your email through their own local file scanner and handle the communication with the mail server. If you have turned on the email scan to work with Eudora and are experiencing difficulty connecting to your mail servers to check or send mail, you must disable the email scan and reset your account settings within Eudora. If you do not disable the email scan, it will continue to change your eudora.ini file to reset your settings. For Example in older versions of Norton: To disable Norton 2000's email scan:
To reconfigure Eudora to your original settings:
Note that you should not lose any virus protection by disabling the email scan. Your antivirus software should check for viruses when the file is written out to the hard drive or executed. Since all attachments Eudora receives are decoded automatically and saved to your specified attachments directory, your antivirus will still scan them and detect any viruses sent to you. We have contacted Norton's technical support about this issue and their advice was the same: turn off the email scan and reset your settings to their original configuration. Not all service providers support their protocol (if your ISP requires APOP or Kerberos, Norton 2000's email scan must be disabled). Keywords: EPWIN, VIRUS
