Dialing Error : Domain Name Services (Mac OS 8.5) Document ID: 1589HQISSUE: In Mac Eudora (Classic, OS 8.5), I can't dial-in through my modem and check my email. It comes up with an error message - "Error Involving Domain Name Services". SOLUTION: Several users have reported problems with Eudora's OT/PPP cooperation since upgrading their OS to 8.5, and their dialer to ARA 3.x. Eudora will successfully start up a connection, but fail with a DNS error. If Eudora is not set to disconnect automatically, the PPP connection would remain up and the next mail check would occur without problems. The cause is a bug in ARA that reports the connection as up and running to Eudora before it actually is. We've added a new setting, <x-eudora-setting:13102>, to add a delay between the time the PPP connection is reported up, and when Eudora makes it's first network call (the DNS lookup). The intention here is to let ARA finish bringing up the connection in the background before Eudora does anything network. This setting defaults to 0, to provide the best performance for non-affected users. The change made it into Mac Eudora 4.2 or later, available from our Updater page. In Eudora Pro for Macintosh version 4.2 or later, copy and paste the following into the body of any new message: <x-eudora-setting:13102> and double click it (it will highlight as a URL). Enter a value of 1 or 2 for starters. Then let Eudora try a mail check with OT/PPP cooperation enabled. It should dial the phone, delay for the number of seconds you entered, then continue with the mail check. Play around with the number entered, and maybe it will help get rid of the error you are currently seeing. If you are using an earlier version of Eudora Pro (3.x), we recommend installing esoteric settings plug-in and turning off OT/PPP cooperation Installing Esoteric Settings:
You should now have an "Open Transport" setting under special/settings... Check "Ignore MacSlip and OT/PPP". NOTE: Eudora will no longer dial your Internet service provider automatically. You will need to manually connect your Internet connection. KEYWORDS: ALLCARDS, EPMAC, DOMAIN, NAME, SERVER, ERROR, INVOLVING, 8.5, OT, OPEN TRANSPORT, ARA
