UIDL vs Status headers in 4.1

Document ID: 1351HQ

After upgrading to Version 4.1

PROBLEM:

Eudora fails to recognize the mail on the server and a mail check returns "You have no new mail."

SOLUTION:

Make sure that another mail program is not logging into the server and deleting the messages.

When checking for mail, Eudora uses UIDL (Unique ID Listing) by default to distinguish what messages have been downloaded before and what messages are new. Most up-to-date servers support UIDL, however, some of the older servers do not support this feature. If your server does not support UIDL, Eudora will have no way of knowing whether the mail on the server has been downloaded previously, and may not retrieve any mail from the server. You will have to tell Eudora to use a different method for determining unread messages on the server. To do that you will have to add or modify the following settings in the eudora.ini file under the [Settings] section.

Note: Eudora must be closed while editing the eudora.ini file.

The following are the default settings that set Eudora to use UIDL as the method for determining which messages to download:

FirstUnreadNormal=1

FirstUnreadStatus=0

UsePOPLast=0

Note: This is the configuration that will be assumed if these lines are not present in the Eudora.ini file. One or more of these lines may already be present, so be sure that you don't add duplicate entries when modifying the INI file.

If your server does not support UIDL you will need to change the settings in Eudora to check for the Status header of the message. Change the above settings to read:

FirstUnreadNormal=0

FirstUnreadStatus=1

UsePOPLast=0

This method will ignore the UIDL number for the messages and query the server to see whether the message's headers mark the message as read. If the message is marked as status: read, it will not be downloaded.

Note: If the server does not support UIDL, Eudora will take longer to get those messages. You may want to switch to a server that supports UIDL as it will be much faster to log in to get the those messages.

KEYWORDS: EPWIN, STATUS: HEADERS, POP3 LAST COMMAND, UIDL, NO MAIL
