Error Involving Domain Name System (Macintosh)

Document ID: 1230HQ

ISSUE:

When I try to check or send mail, Eudora comes up with an Error Involving Domain Name System.

SOLUTION:

Nearly all of these errors are caused because of a typo or error in the setup. Check these two things.

1.

In Eudora, go to Special: Settings: Getting Started. Verify that the Username, Mail Server, and SMTP Server fields are correct - including correct capitalization (most likely all lower case) and punctuation.

Make sure you Mail Host and SMTP fields are spelled out and not in the IP address format, for example 123.45.255.54. The Mail Host is also commonly known as the Incoming Mail Server or POP Server. The SMTP server is also known as the Outgoing Mail Server.

If you are not sure what your Mail Host or SMTP servers are, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or e-mail administrator for the information.

2.

It could also mean that your Mac's OS Network setup is not configured properly.

If you're using Mac OS X, go to the Apple Menu: System Preferences: Network. Under the TCP/IP tab, make sure that everything here is configured properly - particularly the DNS Servers and Search Domains. If you're not 100% positive that these settings are set properly, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or e-mail administrator for the information.

If you're using Mac OS 9 or earlier, go to your Control Panels folder and open your "MacTCP" or "TCP/IP" control panel. There's an area in your control panel where you can set up the Name Server. The name server is required for Eudora (and your other Internet applications) to be able to look up your mail hosts. Your system administrator or Internet Service Provider can tell you what your Name Server is. It should be a sequence of four numbers, for example 123.45.932.54.

If the Name Server area in the control panel won't let you change its setting, either click Manual (MacTCP control panel) or open Edit menu, choose User Mode and then Administrator (TCP/IP control panel).

NOTE: If you only get the "Domain Name System" error when you try to have Eudora do the dialing of your modem connection, try these instructions.

KEYWORDS: ALLCARDS, EPMAC, DNS, -3170
