Messages sort out of date order (Macintosh)

Document ID: 1207HQ

ISSUE:

Eudora (Macintosh) is not sorting messages in proper date order. Some messages are appearing out of date order.

SOLUTION:

Firstly, make sure that the mailbox you're looking at is set to display messages in Date Order. At the top of the mailbox is the word Date - click on the Date header twice and the button should be shaded. Eudora should now sort this mailbox by Date Order.

If the messages are still not displaying in proper order, you most likely have an incorrect time zone setting on your Macintosh.

If you're on Mac OS X:

  1. From the Apple menu, go to System Preferences

  2. Click on "Date & Time"

  3. Click "Time Zone"

  4. Choose your part of the world, then choose a city from the pop-up menu

  5. Restart Eudora

If you're on Mac OS 8 or 9:

  1. From the Apple menu, go to Control Panels: Date & Time

  2. Click "Set Time Zone"

  3. Restart Eudora

If you're on an older Mac OS:

  1. From the Apple menu, go to Control Panels: Map

  2. Look at the blinking star on the map and the city named. If the star is not near your location, or the city is not in your time zone, type a new (large) city that is in your time zone.

  3. Click the Find button, and make sure it finds it (the star will move on the map). If it doesn't find that city, try another, larger one.

  4. Once it's found a city in your time zone, click the Set button.

  5. Restart Eudora.

If the issue continues, go to the Special menu, choose Settings, and choose Date Display. Select Local timezone then click OK.

If Local timezone is not set, the dates/times of the messages are displayed with respect to the sender's time zone. In a mailbox, click the vertical divider to the right of the Date header, and drag it to the right, to widen the Date display area. You'll see the Greenwich Mean Time offset that's used to calculate the time the message was sent. This can be confusing, but if you add up the hours, you should see that the messages are really in the right absolute order. They're in the order that they were sent, but when the senders are in different time zones, the times/dates can look like they're out of order in your mailbox listing.
